30 Second Timer

Thirty seconds is the unit of drills, holds and rinses. It is the recommended hand wash twice over, the plank a beginner can actually hold, the rest between rounds in circuit training, and the time a mouthwash label asks for and nobody gives it.

Short timers are the ones people most often run in their head, and heads are bad at this. Under effort thirty seconds stretches; while resting it collapses. In a set of ten rounds those errors compound in the same direction every time, and the session you think you did is not the one you did.

The tip is about the display rather than the timing. At thirty seconds you cannot afford to look away and look back, so make the number big: press F for fullscreen and put the screen where you are already looking. The digits are pixel blocks rather than a font, so filling a monitor with them costs nothing in sharpness.

Press start or the space bar. For repeating rounds of work and rest, the interval timer is the tool rather than this one.

Questions

Is there a shorter one?

Any length works from the address: add ?t=10s or ?t=45s to this page and it starts a countdown of exactly that.

Can I use it for circuit training?

For a single round it is fine. For thirty seconds on, thirty off, repeated eight times, use the interval timer, because restarting a countdown by hand mid-set is how a circuit falls apart.

Does the sound come fast enough to be useful?

Yes. The alarm is synthesized in the browser rather than downloaded, so there is no file to fetch and nothing to buffer before it plays.
