15 Minute Timer

Fifteen minutes is the length of a task you have been putting off for a week. It is a quarter of an hour, which means it fits the way calendars are drawn, and it is long enough to finish something small completely rather than start something large badly.

It is the standard interval for a lot of practical work: the break in a long meeting, the rest between physiotherapy sets, the oven check, the amount of time a room needs to air. Parents and teachers use it constantly, because fifteen minutes is the largest block a child will accept without a negotiation.

One tip. Fifteen minutes is the best length for a deliberately unambitious block, the one you use when you are too tired to start properly. Pick the smallest version of the job, set fifteen minutes, and stop when it rings whether or not you feel like continuing. Stopping on time is what makes the next one easy to begin.

Start with the button or the space bar. Add a minute with the button if you are nearly there.

Questions

Is fifteen minutes enough for a study block?

It is enough for revision, flashcards or a problem set you already understand. For anything you need to think your way into, twenty-five or fifty is a better fit.

Can I bookmark a fifteen minute timer that starts by itself?

Yes. Bookmark /15-minute-timer?autostart=1 and it begins counting the moment the page opens.

What happens if I close the tab halfway?

Reopen it and the countdown is where it should be. It stores the moment it is due to end, not the number of seconds it has counted.
