Speedrun Timer

A speedrun timer counts up, and the number that matters is the one at the end. This one starts on the space bar, records a split with L, and stops with the same key it started with, which is as much ceremony as a practice run needs.

Practice is where most runs are actually won. A category is a sequence of segments, and improvement comes from knowing which segment is costing you rather than from watching a single final time creep down. Splits turn one number into a list of places to look.

The tip is about comparison. Compare a run against your own best segments rather than against your best run, because a personal best is usually one good attempt with several ordinary segments in it. The sum of your best segments is the honest target, and it is always faster than the time you have actually recorded.

For a serious attempt with load removal, autosplitting and a saved history, use a dedicated desktop application. This is the timer for practice, for a category you are learning, and for when the run is happening on a machine you do not control.

Questions

Does this do load removal or autosplitting?

No. Both need to read the game's memory, which a web page cannot do. For submitted runs use a desktop timer; this is for practice and for machines where you cannot install one.

How do I record a split?

Press L, or the lap button. Splits are kept as total elapsed readings and the segment lengths are worked out from them, so the running total never drifts away from the segments.

Will it keep time if I alt-tab into the game?

Yes. The elapsed time is measured against the clock rather than counted while the tab is visible, so a backgrounded browser reports exactly the same time when you come back.
