8 Minute Timer

Eight minutes is roughly how long sunlight takes to reach us, which is a pleasant thing to know and no use at all in a kitchen. What it is useful for: an egg with a yolk that is set but not chalky, a cafetiere left longer than the packet says, and a serious block of abdominal work.

It is also the length publishers aim at for an article people finish, and a common warm-up before a heavy lift: long enough to raise a temperature without eating into the session.

The tip is about eggs, since that is why most people are here. Eight minutes from the moment the water returns to a boil gives a set yolk with a bright centre, and the gap between eight and ten is the gap between that and the grey ring. Into cold water the moment it rings, or it carries on cooking.

Press start or the space bar. Add a minute with the button if the eggs came straight out of the fridge.

Questions

Is eight minutes right for a hard boiled egg?

For a set but bright yolk, yes. Ten gives a fully firm yolk and the beginnings of the grey ring, and the timing shifts a little with egg size and altitude.

Can I add a minute without losing my place?

Yes. The plus button extends a running countdown, and reset always brings you back to the eight minutes this page is for.

Is it accurate enough for cooking?

It is anchored to your device's clock, so it does not drift the way a tick counter does in a background tab. For a boiled egg that is comfortably more precision than the pan gives you.
