6 Minute Timer

Six minutes has a clinical life most people never meet. In the six minute walk test a patient walks as far as they can along a flat corridor while a nurse times it, and the distance is one of the standard measures of how well a heart and a pair of lungs are working together.

Domestically it is a boiled egg with a set white and a running yolk, a fast chapter, and two pop songs. It sits in the awkward band where a job is too long to stand and wait for and too short to start something else.

The tip is for that awkward band specifically: choose the second job before you start the timer, not after. Six minutes spent deciding what to do with six minutes is the commonest way the block gets wasted, and the decision costs nothing if you make it while the pan is coming to the boil.

Press start or the space bar. Reset returns to six minutes however far you have typed away from it.

Questions

What is the six minute walk test?

A clinical measure of exercise capacity: the distance someone covers walking at their own pace for six minutes on level ground. It is used in lung and heart care because it needs a corridor and a timer.

Is six minutes right for an egg?

For a large egg from the fridge into already boiling water, six gives a set white and a liquid yolk. The egg page has the other timings, and the difference between six and eight is bigger than it sounds.

Does it carry on if I open another tab?

Yes. The remaining time is worked out from the clock, so browsing elsewhere, minimising the window or letting the machine sleep does not slow it down.
